Senate Democrats Show Redistricting Maps Can Be About Fairness Rather Than Protecting Incumbents

GOP Gerrymandered Maps Look to Achieve Partisan Advantage, Disenfranchise Voters

LANSING – Michigan Democratic Party Chair Mark Brewer today applauded Senate Democrats for introducing a Senate redistricting map that includes six majority-minority districts, a distinction that puts it in full compliance with the Federal Voting Rights Act, something that is lacking from the Republican maps currently being considered.

“The Federal Voting Rights Act prevents this type of gerrymandering that Senate Republicans are doing to protect their incumbents,” said Brewer.  “They are ignoring the rights of Michigan’s minority populations out of fear that it would create fair challenges for their Republican incumbents in those areas.”

Brewer added that the map introduced by the Senate Democrats today clearly demonstrates that district boundaries can be drawn in a sensible and fair manner, putting it in stark contrast to the Republican maps currently being considered that were clearly developed for political purposes.

“The map introduced by the Senate Democrats today further highlights how flawed the Republican plan truly is,” added Brewer.  “Instead of focusing on protecting existing members of the legislature as the Republican plan does, the Senate Democrats have focused on what is right: fairly representing Michigan’s voters.”
